Somebody has already picked which story is worth the gamble before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set. Trace a few hits backward and you often discover a book at the start of the chain. Based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport, ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice is a 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child. Bound by Honor, the mafia arranged-marriage series ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, is drawn from a novel by Cora Reilly. The Korean office romance Quiet in the Office!, from 2026 and given a 19+ age rating, is adapted short drama from a web novel and webtoon. With a number of app owners also running reading businesses, source material stays close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. When there is no book to draw on, writers turn to tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, family drama and identity reveals. A script has one job: to squeeze a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Casting is where the format’s economics surface on screen. Skim the cast lists for short series on IMDb and the same names keep appearing. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance tale about a former football star. On GoodShort in 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, starring opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. Leads with a following on one app come to the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so studios are also casting with a specific viewer in mind. A production team in Los Angeles is run by DramaBox.
Going by TheWrap, a Western short drama is typically shot in eight to ten days at a cost of $150,000 to $300,000 per series. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is pegged at $150,000 to $250,000. Simple arithmetic shows that, shooting a 70-episode series in eight days means filming close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers that sell overseas have reported slimmer numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Per finished episode, that equals roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also stated that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. Dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.
The editors chop the footage into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the edit suite, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is built around a question the next episode pledges to answer. What pulls you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, the house style. Piece those slivers together and a 70-episode series adds up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. The same footage can reach viewers who never open the app, as ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Put another way, editors are cutting video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Finally comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. According to TheWrap, the standard model makes the first eight to ten episodes free. ReelShort’s own blog notes its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, while TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Episodes after that are unlocked with coins, with the standard cost of an episode given as about 60 coins on ReelShort’s blog. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; otherwise, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. Since prices differ by platform, country and promotion, your store may display something different. Along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, so placement is the contentious part. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and best avoided.
In the newest production stage, the camera is gone entirely. Animated motion comics now run alongside ReelShort’s live-action library. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and finally exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series shares the name, and the two should not be confused. DramaWave has gone the furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.
Traditional studios have taken note, and the plainest example is Fox Entertainment. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, received an equity investment from Fox. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside, and Fox has also committed to making more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. The eight-day shoot, it seems, has gone from curiosity to line item, now that a network-scale producer is committing to that volume.

Laying the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. The expensive, fixed block is the shoot, and much of the rest is organized around it. Scripts tend to come pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting leans on familiar faces, and the edit is designed around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to summarize typical time and cost at each stage. If no reliable number has been published, the table notes that instead of guessing.
| Production stage | Typical time / cost | What takes place |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and script | No published figure | A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Cast selection | No public number | Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this step |
| Filming | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame |
| The edit | Episodes running 60–100 seconds | Footage is cut into installments, each ending on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall placement | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort | Episodes are unlocked with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animated series | Costs not disclosed | Motion comics like The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI |
| Studio co-productions | 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio makes vertical series for an app |
